| To the conclusion of the year 2008, Daniel Müller-Schott has performed together with Angela Hewitt in New York and in Washington D.C., Sydney Harman Hall, as shown on the photo during their rehearsal. The Washington Post wrote after the performance: „The playing…became authoritative, dramatic, instinctive. Every phrase thrilled with drama; and the two players were perfectly matched, breathing together, speaking together. The New York Times particularly found praise for the Solo-Works of the evening: „… each player also took a major solo turn…here they were fully their virtuosic and expressive selves. Mr. Müller-Schott achieved a remarkable array of colors, roughing up his tone at times to do so.” |

| A PERSONAL NOTE |
With
great sorrow and sympathy I learned, that a unique figure of the
cello world, Harvey Shapiro, at age 96, passed away on October 25th,
2007 in New York City. Harvey Shapiro was not only a great performer
and wonderful teacher for many years at Julliard School, but also
a real instrument expert. He was playing and trying many cellos by
Montagnana and Stradivari during his life and yet, in 1948, he decided
to buy a Cello by the great Italian maker Matteo Goffriller from
Venice, made in 1727 -- an instrument, named as ‘Ex Földeszy’.
Földeszy was a former cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
In fact, this instrument has a great history and Harvey Shapriro
played many performances on it during his distinguished career. Harvey
remained owner of the Goffriller instrument for the past 58 years
and never wanted to change to any other cello. I still remember,
what his words were, when I first tried his cello: ‘You will
be surprised what the cello is able to do with the sound in big
acoustics’. And he was right, the cello has an enormous volume
and sings as freely as you can imagine. I feel very honored,
with the help of a sponsor, to be able to play on this wonderful
cello today. I also feel grateful, that he has thought of me as the
next player for his cello. He was for a long time thinking of passing
on the cello to the next generation, and in 2006, after he has
heard me several times, it found it’s new owner. Despite the
very sad news today, I feel fortunate to having been a friend of
Harvey
Shapiro and also having experienced the incredible energy and his
charismatic personality -- something truly unforgettable. His
enthusiasm
for the music is something I still share with him every day, when
I play on his instrument. |
